DAY_4 Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars

“Come,” he replied “and you will see.”

“And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.” (Genesis 1:14-19)

“The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.” (John 1:35-42)

On the fourth day of Creation, Genesis describes the formation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Light has already been created but here we see God making and ordering reflectors and carriers of that light. In John 1:35-42, John the Baptist sees Jesus and again announces him as the Lamb of God. Two of John’s disciples decide to follow Jesus. The Light that came into the world was being reflected in those first few who decided to follow him. The power of this Light was always intended to be reflected.

Day four is also special as this is the first time the Word speaks in the Gospel of John. We see the purpose of these first words is to create disciples. In Genesis, the first time God speaks is to create light.

The witness of these first disciples would reflect this light into a dark world. By Jesus’s first words to these two mirrors, he invites them into his mission. In fact, the very Gospel of John is written by one of these first two light-bearers.
