What is Reel Faith?
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the connection between movies and faith. Growing up, my grandparent's home was a frequent destination, and one of the ways my grandpa and I bonded was by watching Biblical epics from the 50s and '60s.
Leap of Faith (1992)
Leap of Faith (1992) is a film that I watch every year around Easter because even though it was released in the early 90s, we still live in a reality of spiritual manipulation that God still fights to shine through.
Jesus of Montreal (1989)
Jesus of Montreal' is an unconventional movie in the Jesus film genre. Director Denys Arcand explores Jesus's identity through characters interacting with the story, framing it not on a notion of belief but on how the story is told.
The Truman Show (1998)
The Truman Show can be challenging to write about due to its rich themes and lessons. Watching the film feels like experiencing a modern parable similar to the stories of Buddha or the expulsion of Adam and Eve. A key lesson from the movie is the importance of having the courage to question and explore our world.
Waves (2019)
How do we forgive? The A24 movie Waves (2019) focuses on the emotions the Williams family feels as they navigate tragedy.
Eighth Grade (2018)
Coming-of-age films are perfect for exploring identity. Eighth Grade uniquely tackles this theme in the digital age, focusing on anxiety and constant performance.
