In the Beginning
Genesis and the Gospel of John are structured similarly and in quite a remarkable way. John uses the 7 Days of Creation to map out the start of Jesus’s ministry.
DAY 1_ The Creation of Light
On the first day of Creation, we see that the first thing God calls forth is Light. Light is something that reveals and illuminates what is.
DAY_2 Separation of the Waters
On the second day of Creation, Genesis describes God separating the waters of the sea from the waters of the sky. In other words, there is a distinction being made between what’s above and what’s below.
DAY_3 Creation of Land and Vegetation
The “third day” of John 1:29-34 has the first appearance of Jesus since “the Word became flesh”. John the Baptist sees Jesus and praises him as the Lamb of God.
DAY_4 Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars
On the fourth day of Creation, Genesis describes the formation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Light has already been created but here we see God making and ordering reflectors and carriers of that light.
DAY_5 Creation of the Birds and Fish
Day five is all about God creating the birds and fish and then blessing them. It says that this blessing is for them to multiply; filling the space of the sky and sea with more of them.
DAY_6 Creation of Humanity and Land Animals
We see this vibrant life echoed in the miracle performed by Jesus in turning water into wine. Later in Genesis 2, we read that God has formed humans from the dust of the earth.
DAY_7 The Sabbath
However, in John 2:12-25, we see an account that seems at first to deviate from the pattern. Jesus enters the Temple courts in Jerusalem and angrily drives out the money changers.
